Blog #4: The History making B's

Welcome to Blog #4! Yesterday, the Boston Bruins secured the NHL record for single-season victories with their 63rd victory, a 5-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. David Pastrnak scored his 60th goal this season to pass the 300-career goal mark with a hat trick. The Bruins have made so much history this season, but ultimately, none of it will matter if they don’t make a serious run in the playoffs. The Bruins have clinched the Presidents’ Trophy, which is awarded to the team that finishes with the most points during the NHL regular season. An incredible feat to begin with, and they did it in March. While other teams were, and still are, fighting for their playoff lives, the Bruins won the regular season with a whole month of hockey to go.

The Presidents’ Trophy is impressive, but it doesn’t really matter as the Stanley Cup does.

Plus, winning the Presidents’ Trophy is cursed.

Despite having incredible success in the regular season, only eight winners have gone on to hoist the Stanley Cup in the same season.

The most recent one of those teams was the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2012-2013 season. We won’t talk about who they beat to win the cup… but let’s just say 11-year-old me would’ve been thrilled to go to a parade on Causeway in June.

The Bruins have been extraordinary this season, though. By clinching a spot in the playoffs so early and earning a spot as the top team in the league, the team can rest their veteran core, like captain Patrice Bergeron, and those with lingering injuries to ensure that they can remain healthy during the playoffs. With the regular season ending in four games, the Bruins are on the cusp of having the opportunity to make a deep run in the playoffs.

Hopefully, they can make it happen.
